Course Overview
This teaching and learning-focused course explores how to teach some of the most challenging areas of the OCR A Level PE Paper 1 specification through adaptive teaching strategies and high-quality explanations.
Built around live lesson simulation, video analysis and structured discussion, the course focuses on how difficult physiological content can be sequenced, explained and adapted so that all learners can understand, retain and apply knowledge confidently in exam situations.
What’s Included
Adaptive explanation strategies
Explore how expert teachers:
- break down difficult concepts through step-by-step, segmented explanations
- use visuals and multi-modal teaching approaches to reduce cognitive overload
- sequence explanations to build on prior knowledge
- adapt explanations in response to misconceptions and checks for understanding
Simulated classroom experience
Engage with:
- live lesson modelling
- classroom video analysis
- structured discussion around effective teaching and learning
- examples of responsive teaching in real classroom situations
Collaborative lesson design and practice
Teachers will also have opportunities to:
- design and refine their own step-by-step explanations for challenging topics
- build multi-modal teaching sequences using visuals, questioning and structured student talk
- practise delivering explanations within small-group lesson simulations
- receive feedback and discuss how explanations can be adapted for different learners and misconceptions
- explore how checks for understanding can guide responsive teaching in real time
Tough topic teaching approaches
Examine practical ways to teach and sequence challenging physiological content
from:
- Applied Anatomy & Physiology
- Exercise Physiology
- Biomechanics
Example areas selected from:
- altitude and heat
- EPOC
- flexibility training/lifestyle disease
- projectiles angular motion
Student talk and checks for understanding
Develop strategies to:
- improve student verbal reasoning before writing
- structure paired discussion and explanation tasks
- use purposeful questioning to uncover misconceptions
- adapt teaching in real time based on student responses
